History of the Maryland State Flag

The Maryland state flag was created when the Civil War finally came to an end and the yellow and black Calvert colors and the red and white Crossland colors had become clearly a representative of the state of Maryland. A new symbol began to emerge, displayed at public events across the state. A state flag displaying the colors, that had once symbolized the divisions between the citizens of Maryland, came to represent the reconciliation and reunion of all of the citizens in the state. The design of the Maryland state flag derived from the Calvert coat of arms which was flown October 11, 1880, in Baltimore, at a parade celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the city. It was also flown October 25, 1888 at the Gettysburg battlefield, in a ceremony dedicating monuments to members of the Maryland regiments of the Army of Potomac.
